ARMY GUIDES
Information on the make-up of the different armies of Vortimax is provided in the background information at the end of this book. Full and far more detailed army lists will be published at a later date. However, players who desire some guidance can use the following parameters, as modified by the information in the background details.
MORALE CLASS
An average army should be made up out of the following morale classes: a minimum 50% B class and 30% C class, with the balance being made up of A B or C class troops. Thus an army of 100 figures could contain: 20 A class troops, 50 B class and 30 C class. Alternatively it could contain 70 B class and 30 C class, or 10 A class, 50 B class and 40 C class.
CAVALRY AND INFANTRY
There are no restrictions, beyond those given in the background information on the ratio of cavalry to infantry in an army.
CHARACTERS
With regard to characters, it is suggested that each army should have no more than one per 40 soldiers. Thus an army of 240 soldiers could be led by a maximum of six characters. Of these characters, the number of Magic-users, warrior priests and priests should be limited to ensure balanced games. No more than one warrior priest or priest per 100 soldiers should be allowed, and one magic-user per 150 soldiers. Thus an army of 240 soldiers could be supported by one warrior priest, one magic-user and four other characters drawn from the classes of Warrior Heroes, Thieves and Discipline Masters.
MONSTERS
Players are advised to field no more than one monster per 100 soldiers.
WEAPON MIXES
The type and mix of weapons varies from race to race. Below are general guides that may be used in conjunction with and modified by the information on military organisation, contained in the background section of these rules.
The figures given in this section are maximums not minimums and players are allowed up to a 3% leeway. The percentages for ordinary combat weapons are given first and for missile weapons second. Players will note that javelins can be used to equip troops armed with ordinary combat weapons and do not count against any overall percentages or against the missile percentage. Thus the percentage for javelins is listed in brackets under combat weapons. The percentage for spears may be raised if a player forgoes his percentage allowances for pikes and or polearms. It is raised by the same figure as that which is passed over. Thus if a high elf army contained no pikemen, the number of spearmen it could possess would rise to 45%.
The percentages listed under missile weapons only apply to those figures allowed to have such weapons. Thus in a dwarven army of 200 figures, up to 40 may be armed with missile weapons. Of these, a maximum of 10 could be equipped with firearms (25%), 10 with shortbows (25%) and the balance with crossbows (50%). Alternatively, they could all be equipped with crossbows (100%).
Troops armed with missile weapons should also be equipped with an ordinary weapon. Equipping them with such weapons does count toward the overall percentage for that particular weapon type. Players should also note that the restriction on weapon types, listed on the weapon costs tables are also in force!
Example: An army of 100 dwarfs could contain 20 crossbowmen with axes, 10 dwarfs armed with halberds and swords, 15 dwarfs armed with pikes and axes, 20 dwarfs armed with double-handed axes, 20 dwarfs armed with spears, and 15 dwarfs armed with maces, of which ten may also be armed with up to three javelins each.
